"This system has taken hours off of maintaining my birds’ health and well being." |
Dennis Tice, of DMJ’s Feathered Affair in Selden, New York, breeds a variety of birds including African Greys, Senegals, Red Belly parrots, and Cockatiels. He has ten pairs of Greys, five pairs of Senegals, seven pairs of Red Bellies, and eighty Cockatiels. Dennis began raising birds in 1979 when someone gave him a pair of breeding cockatiels because they were constantly laying eggs. The cockatiels are housed in an outdoor flight all year, which is heated in the winter. The rest of the birds reside in pairs in California Breeder Cages.
Dennis has been using an Edstrom Automated Watering System for eight years. He uses a pressure regulator to supply water to the system, and ½ inch plastic pipe for the distribution lines. The Senegals, Red Belly parrots, and Cockatiels drink from the Vari-Flo valve, while the Greys use the Parrot valve. To sanitize the watering system, Dennis fills it with Novasan once a year and rinses the solution through all the drinking valves. According to Dennis, “I have no more dirty water or filthy cups to clean. What else has to be said? The potential health problems that lie in bacteria laden water are no longer an issue - the birds always have a clean source of water. All of my birds adapted easily to the drinking valves. This system has taken hours off of maintaining my birds’ health and well being.”
